I saw a video earlier today which documented the life of the legendary masked entertainer, Lagbaja (real name: Bisade Ologunde) on YouTube. In those 35-plus minutes, the content creator detailed how the musician grew from obscurity into popularity within Nigeria and internationally. He spoke about the professional relationship between Lagbaja and Nwakaego Iheanacho and the successes that followed, and how Ego left to pursue a solo career, and the rest of the story, no one reigns forever in this industry.
I personally do not think Lagbaja does not have his works safe somewhere, because I know he has one of the best structures among his peers in that era. I wonder, however, why he may not have transitioned them into the digital era as the content creator observed. Perhaps he has chosen to continue to maintain his ‘anonymous’ (that’s the meaning of the Yoruba word – Lagbaja) nature. Well, maybe he will experience a stirring right now, as us Yorubas believe when they are talking about you from distant places.
All the same, while he has left us guessing, for me, the lesson I want to draw out is the need for us, as creatives, to properly document our works in order for it to cross over to several generations. May God help us!
