While several millions of us middle-aged adults are still whining and complaining about the sudden change from our lovely ‘Arise o compatriots’ anthem that we have known all our life in favour of a return to the inaugural anthem of Nigeria at Independence which is bringing nostalgic chills to our senior citizens, I realize that our children have no care in the world about those. They are joyfully singing the new anthem with no iota of worry for any politicking. They just want to sing their loyalty to their country, no more no less.
I assumed that our children should be the most confused lot when the decision was made on 29th May 2024 with the bill signed by Pres. Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. This is because how do you sing a national anthem yesterday in school and get to school next morning to learn how to sing another national anthem in the same country. What changed, I reckon what’s on their minds.
Amazingly, our children have moved on full time. I was at a privately owned primary school yesterday where I serve as the school administrator and they joyfully sing the anthem. I have heard many more children sing the national anthem in several other primary and secondary schools. I must say it’s been almost 3 years since that new policy was instituted and our children are excited.
What’s my point: if we will sometimes take life issues with the mind of a child, we will have less worry.
