Team Nigeria has concluded an impressive campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, finishing seventh overall on the final medals table and emerging as Africa’s highest-ranked nation, reinforcing the country’s status as one of the continent’s leading sporting powers. Australia emerged overall champions at the global sporting event.
The Nigerian contingent wrapped up the Games with an impressive haul of 24 medals – 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze – producing memorable performances across several events and surpassing every other African nation on the medals table.
The strong showing was driven by outstanding displays in para powerlifting, weightlifting, athletics, wrestling and other medal events, with several athletes delivering personal bests and record-breaking performances that kept Nigeria firmly among the top-performing nations throughout the competition.
Although the team narrowly missed its target of finishing among the top six nations, the overall performance has been widely hailed as a significant achievement and a testament to the resilience, determination and talent of Nigerian athletes competing against some of the Commonwealth’s strongest sporting nations.
The Glasgow Games, held from July 23 to August 2, featured athletes from about 73 nations and territories in the Commonwealth. They competed in 10 sports and more than 200 medal events. As the curtain falls on another successful edition, Team Nigeria returns home with renewed confidence and valuable momentum ahead of future continental and global competitions.
