On my way to work today, I started reflecting on how the loads of trash that litter our roads got there. I considered that the trash didn’t get there if people didn’t dump them, and those people had PSPs operating in their respective streets. This is Lagos and I know the state is largely covered by LAWMA PSPs. And theirs is a paid service.
I know that those ones too have failed in their duty, and failed woefully in the past 1 year. But I am wondering why, as a person, I would use that as an alibi and carry my trash all the way from my home to the road median, why am I paying. As how na, people who do it, have they no shame?
We all are now complaining about how Lagos roads are dirty, yet it is from among us that has done this irresponsible act. We should all have kept our trash in our respective streets and mount pressure on those who ought to do the jobs of packing them directly off the streets to the dumpsite.
On that note, I am calling out LAWMA for not fulfilling its end of the bargain by taking trash promptly off streets. People will not be encouraged to pay when they are not enjoying the service.
On the challenge of dumpsites being full, that is a call for the Lagos State Government to deal. It is time again to rethink urban planning. The gains that we are enjoying today were planned in the 1970s/80s. Lagos will not stop attracting people. It will have to find a way around this brouhaha in order to live out its potentials as one of the world’s fastest growing megacities.
