One of the biggest lessons that we have learned in the Christian Faith is the covenantal blessing that was passed from Abraham to Isaac, then to Jacob and down to the 12 patriarchs. Jacob inherited the blessing after his father Isaac satisfied by the palatable meal ostensibly prepared by him and declared the grace. His twin brother, Esau, however, narrowly missed out on the blessing ‘even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done’ as the Bible recorded in Heb. 12:17b, NIV.
But God wasn’t done with Esau despite missing the Abrahamic covenant. He got something crucial. He got the blessing of restlessness. ‘By your sword you shall live, And you shall serve your brother; And it shall come to pass, when you become restless, That you shall break his yoke from your neck.’ (Gen. 27:40) Later in life, the Bible noted that Esau had grown so large that he didn’t need a pin from the greatness of Jacob. This is the result of the blessing.
I submit that whether you are Jacob or Esau in life, you need the blessing of restlessness. You need wholesome dissatisfaction, holy anger, to keep moving forward in life. If you ever get to a point in life where you think ‘you have arrived’, then you are a goner.
May we enjoy the blessing of restlessness all life long. Amen!
