When Gold Holds the Diamond

Share

“Old friends are gold, new friends are diamond. If you get diamonds, don’t forget gold – because only gold can hold a diamond.”

That popular maxim came alive for me today in a very personal way. My best friend sent me a WhatsApp message after more than one year of silence. There was no quarrel between us, no misunderstanding, no dramatic separation. Life had simply happened. Work, responsibilities, distance, and the daily rush of adulthood gradually pushed attention into the background.

As we conversed, we laughed about how far apart we had become despite years of friendship. The conversation was warm, effortless, and familiar, as though the missing months had suddenly disappeared. Yet beneath the laughter was a gentle reminder that good friendships should not be left to assumptions.

Too often, we convince ourselves that the other person is too busy, too occupied, or no longer interested in keeping in touch. Sometimes, both friends are thinking the same thing, and the relationship slowly fades, not because affection has died, but because communication has.

New friendships are beautiful, and life will bring us wonderful new people – our “diamonds” but old friends that life has brought are our “gold” – tested by time, shared memories, struggles, victories, and growth.
