Tinubu Lauds Nigeria’s New Role on UN Human Rights Council, Backs Stronger War Against Financial Crimes

Nigeria’s rising profile in international human rights diplomacy and her renewed emphasis on financial accountability have come into focus following the country’s 172-vote win of a membership seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commendation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Yesterday, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, sent his congratulations to the President over the country’s election to the council, describing the development as an opportunity to deepen Nigeria’s participation in global conversations on human rights protection, accountability and international cooperation.

The UN Human Rights Council is responsible for addressing human rights concerns across the world, examining alleged violations and promoting dialogue among member states. Nigeria’s membership is expected to expand its engagement with other nations on the protection of fundamental rights and the advancement of international human rights standards.

Meanwhile, Tinubu has commended the EFCC for its efforts in investigating and prosecuting financial crimes, securing convictions and recovering proceeds of illicit activities. The President gave the commendation on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at the opening of the eighth EFCC and National Judicial Institute (NJI) Workshop for Judges and Justices in Abuja. Vice President Kashim Shettima represented him at the event. The workshop examined the complexities of investigating and prosecuting economic and financial crimes in the digital age, particularly offences involving cryptocurrency and virtual assets.

Tinubu praised the commission’s efforts to adapt to emerging technologies and combat technology-enabled financial crimes. He also urged anti-corruption agencies and the judiciary to strengthen their collaboration to ensure effective prosecution, justice delivery and proper management of recovered assets.

The convergence of these developments highlights Nigeria’s engagement on two critical fronts: advancing human rights internationally and strengthening accountability within its domestic justice system.
