By declaration of a public holiday, today 20th of August has been recognized by 4 States in the Southwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria as Isese Day. This is a welcome development in a secular, I prefer multi-religious, society as ours.
The African traditional religions have guided this society for eons before the arrival of the Abrahamic religions. Yet by our peaceful and accommodating nature, we have adopted them even to the detriment of the pre-existing religions. Christians celebrate about 4 days yearly of public holidays and Muslims a minimum of 4 days.
We have a population of ours who have chosen to live their lives by the ethics and values of the African traditional religions, proselytizing nonetheless. It should only be fair, by the same peaceful and accommodating nature of ours, to not just applaud this 1 day in the Southwest but to advocate for its national recognition. That’s how to live and Let’s live.
