That ebola is back in Nigeria, confirmed yesterday 20th October 2026, is no longer news. It simply brings to mind the heroics of the late Amazon, Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh, the physician who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the last saga in 2014 to prevent a far greater public-health catastrophe.
A Yoruba adage says “Àìṣe dáadáa ará ayé ló ń múni rántí ará ọ̀run; it is the failures of the living that make us remember the brilliance of the departed.” Beyond the nostalgia lies an uncomfortable question: have we built a system worthy of the sacrifice she made? Who is going to be our Adadevoh this time around? The first Adadevoh, how well did we repay her service?
While we ask all these questions, it is time to revert to all the safety protocols we abandoned 12 years ago, and recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. Let us wash our hands regularly, maintain good hygiene, avoid contact with suspected cases and their bodily fluids, and watch out for symptoms such as fever, severe fatigue, headache and muscle pain, especially after possible exposure. Do not self-medicate or dismiss suspicious symptoms as malaria; seek medical guidance and promptly alert the appropriate health authorities.
Let us rely on verified information from the NCDC and WHO, not rumours or panic. And as we do our part, let us pray for our nation. Na only God fit help us o!
