The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been named Central Bank of the Year 2026 by the prestigious Central Banking Awards in London, a landmark recognition that places Nigeria’s apex bank at the forefront of global monetary institutions following a sweeping programme of economic and financial reforms. The award presentation held on Wednesday 10th June in London after the announcement was made earlier in March 2026.

The international award recognises the CBN’s efforts under Governor Olayemi Cardoso to restore macroeconomic stability, strengthen institutional credibility, rebuild investor confidence and implement far-reaching monetary and foreign exchange reforms after years of policy distortions. According to the awards committee, the Bank demonstrated “significant institutional strength” by reversing unorthodox monetary policies, tightening monetary conditions, rebuilding foreign exchange reserves and improving transparency in the foreign exchange market.

Receiving the award in London, Cardoso described the honour as a recognition of the collective commitment of the Bank’s leadership and workforce to institutional reforms. He said the recognition would serve as further motivation to deepen reforms aimed at promoting economic stability, sustainable growth and financial inclusion.

The Central Banking Awards, regarded as one of the most respected honours in the global central banking community, celebrate excellence, innovation and leadership among central banks worldwide. The recognition is expected to further boost Nigeria’s standing among international investors and reinforce confidence in the country’s ongoing economic reform agenda.
