Let’s All Become Farmers!

This piece was inspired by a reader’s response to my article, “May You Never Know Poverty.”

His feedback resonates with what my wife is doing in our house. Before I called in a bricklayer to make a nursery bed, she was already raising vegetables (and a tuber of yam) in jute bags and plastic containers around the house. She also got a cage for three hens (layers), now four, that give us eggs (3 to 4) daily. We’ve not bought eggs in the last 2 months. ‘E make sense o!’

Here’s the reader’s feedback…

“Interesting write up with facts….As long as the earth remaineth, seed time and harvest shall not seize. I think it’s time to start teaching people to till the ground, tend the garden, which was the very first job GOD gave to man at creation. Genesis 1 to 3. At least, everyone should work on producing 50% of what they eat. Gospel in the days coming will only thrive where there is no hunger.

At the entry point of the Gospel in Africa, agriculture, education and medicine, were key instruments to penetration, which have now been exchanged with music and entertainment. I call it a misleading gospel of doom, that has led an entire continent astray. I believe in the practicality of the Gospel. No matter what happens in the economy of the world, food producers will never lack. Shalom.”

Those are true words. Everyone can cultivate something. Find a way, however little, to start growing/producing your own food. You can plant vegetables, pepper and yam, in cement bags and plastic containers, wherever you live. Safeguard yourself against hunger. Become a FARMER. Start now!
