LASUBEB Champions Inclusive Learning through Play • as World Celebrates International Day of Play

The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) today, Thursday, 11th June 2026, joined the world in celebrating the International Day of Play, underscoring the importance of play as a fundamental right of every child and a vital component of quality basic education.

The event, held at the LASUBEB Multi-Purpose Hall, Maryland, Ikeja, themed “Protect Play, Protect Childhood,” brought together teachers, education stakeholders, development partners, and pupils in a colourful celebration of creativity, learning, and childhood development through play.

Speaking at the celebration, the Executive Chairman of LASUBEB, Dr. Hakeem Babatunde Shittu, emphasized that play remains a powerful tool for learning, social interaction, emotional well-being, and cognitive development. He noted that beyond recreation, play helps children develop critical thinking skills, confidence, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities that prepare them for future success.

While applauding Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu on his provisions and support to basic education sector, Dr. Shittu stated that the State Government remains committed to creating safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environments where every child can thrive academically and socially.

According to him, the Board continues to promote child-centred learning approaches that encourages creativity, curiosity, and active participation in a safe classroom environment.

The Chairman further noted that the International Day of Play serves as a reminder to everyone of the collective responsibility to protect children’s right to play and ensure that every child enjoys a balanced and enriching educational experience.

In her remarks, the Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Lagos, Ms. Celine Lafoucriere, stated that play is not a reward for finishing work but an essential part of a child’s growth and development. She emphasized that no child should be denied the opportunity to play whether due to overcrowded classrooms, conflict or any other circumstance. According to her, “When a child plays, their brain grows.

The celebration featured interactive play sessions at St Agnes Public Primary Schools, creative activities, and presentations aimed at highlighting the transformative role of play in learning and child development.
