The longest stint of Democracy that Nigeria currently enjoys since 1999 is rooted in the struggles of great men and women, known and unknown, both living and dead, who fought the military to the standstill in the Third Republic.
Aare Dele Momodu stands boldly as one of the living heroes of Nigeria’s struggle for democracy from that period. He has remained consistent to democratic norms, principles, and ideals ever since.
In a brief chat with TheMediaGood Newspaper on the sidelines of Writers Interactive Network (WIN) literary festival in Lagos, Aare Dele Momodu disclosed why he has chosen to be in opposition. ‘I have been in opposition for 40 years. There is nowhere you can quote me that I said the person I want is already there.’
Aare Dele Momodu who was recently conferred with the chieftaincy title of Akinrogun of Gbongan land in Osun state added: ‘I am in opposition. If we don’t have opposition that means we have a one-party state.’
The structure of one-party rule is antithetical to the fundamental principles of Democracy in any country.
