TO BUILD A NATION WHERE PEACE AND JUSTICE (SHALL) REIGN

Share
Nigeria's senior men's football team, Super Eagles. Had been called 'Green Eagles' previously.

I wasn’t here when Nigeria sang her first national anthem ‘Nigeria we hail thee’ but I sang the second and current one with my ‘love and strength and faith’ as a school student and even now. As I can recall, what I recognize as the last line of the 2nd stanza (or what we know as National Prayer, in official events) is ‘To build a nation where peace and justice shall reign.’

2nd Stanza (aka. National Prayer) of Nigeria’s National Anthem

But what I hear in my interaction with the school system today is different. In some cases, I have heard the last line sang as ‘To build a nation where peace and justice reign.’

My question is ‘where did the ‘shall’ go? Has it been changed and we didn’t know? Was there an official gazette to the effect?

I feel if we are not getting basics like this right, what then do we expect? If you have insight on this, kindly share.
