Nigeria’s telecommunications sector has recorded approximately N13 trillion in revenue, underscoring the industry’s expanding role as a major driver of the country’s digital economy and non-oil growth.
With Nigeria boasting one of the largest mobile markets in Africa, stakeholders believe the industry still holds significant growth potential as digital adoption continues to expand nationwide.
Data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) show that telecom operators continue to experience significant revenue growth, largely fueled by the increasing demand for mobile internet, voice services, and digital platforms across the country.
Industry analysts say the sector’s strong performance reflects the rapid expansion of data services, rising smartphone penetration, and the growing reliance on digital platforms for banking, education, entertainment, and commerce.
The telecommunications industry has also maintained its position as one of the largest contributors to Nigeria’s gross domestic product, consistently accounting for a substantial share of the country’s information and communications technology output.
Major operators dominating Nigeria’s telecom market include MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, and 9mobile, all of which have continued to expand network coverage and invest in new technologies to support the growing demand for connectivity.
Industry reports indicate that increased investments in broadband infrastructure, fibre-optic networks, and next-generation mobile technologies have also helped drive revenue growth across the sector.
In recent years, telecom companies have intensified the rollout of advanced network services such as 4G and 5G while expanding data capacity to meet the needs of Nigeria’s rapidly growing internet user base.
Experts note that the telecom sector remains central to Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda, playing a critical role in promoting financial inclusion, supporting innovation, and enabling the growth of the country’s technology ecosystem.
