The Zonal Commanding Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for Lagos and Ogun States, Assistant Corps Marshal Matthew Olufemi Olonisaye, has declared that longstanding delays in the issuance of driver’s licences have been resolved, urging motorists to comply fully with documentation and safety requirements. He credited recent reforms under Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed for improving efficiency in the system.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with TheMediaGood Newspaper, the Zonal Commander, Matthew Olonisaye who resumed on this new role on 2nd February 2026 highlighted: “I will start by appreciating our Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed for his efforts in relieving members of the public of distress in terms of driver’s license. For some months now, he has really resolved that. In less than two months, you can get your driver’s licence, if you are a fresh applicant or have a temporary driver’s license” Olonisaye said. “There is no reason not to go and process a driver’s licence.”
He disclosed that Lagos now operates a functional driver’s license printing facility capable of daily production. This development addresses previous complaints of backlog and delays that discouraged compliance among motorists. “They print driver’s license everyday. Sometimes they work on weekends if they have to. So we want to advise road users to pick up their driver’s license when it’s ready.”
The FRSC has repeatedly emphasized that possession of a valid driver’s licence is not just a legal requirement but a critical safety measure. “That is the document that gives you the authority to operate on the road,” ACM Matthew Olonisaye stressed, warning that unlicensed driving endangers lives.
Beyond licensing, Olonisaye outlined essential documents and safety equipment required for all drivers, including vehicle registration papers, roadworthiness certificates, fire extinguishers, hackney permit, extra tyres, reflective C-Caution triangles, even Torchlights, blades, and water are essential, he stated. “These things are for your own good. They are to protect your property and to ensure your safety,” he explained.
The Zonal Commanding Officer for Lagos and Ogun states, ACM Matthew Olonisaye Corps also used the opportunity to promote the FRSC digital engagement platforms, including its mobile application, to improve public interaction and access to services. “Yes, some people are engaging but we will continue to sensitize members of the public of its importance and advantages to road users.”
With improved service delivery now in place, the FRSC is shifting focus toward public compliance, reinforcing its mandate to reduce road crashes and enhance safety across Nigeria’s highways.
