The Nigerian Navy, NNS Beecroft, Lagos acting on credible intelligence on Tuesday 2nd April 2024 swooped in on a residential area in Lekki, Lagos to arrest 5 individuals who are involved in bunkering within a Lekki residential area. In the process, the Navy also impounded a large quantity of diesel (also known as automotive gas oil, AGO) from the crime scene.
Speaking on the matter, the Commander of NNS Beecroft, Commodore Rafiu Oladejo noted that preliminary investigation indicated that the suspects were siphoning the petroleum products through pipeline vandalism and illegal vendors along the coastline.
Further, the press statement by the spokesperson of NNS Beecroft, Hussaini Ibrahim revealed that the five suspects were arrested at 3 Silverbird road, Ilasan, Lekki for managing an illegal fuel depot in a residential area. Eight storage tanks were also impounded. The tanks can hold 400,000 litres of diesel, worth about N500 million, if filled to capacity.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have taken charge of the suspects and products for further investigation.
