As part of their activities marking the 70th anniversary of Women in Policing in Nigeria, the female officers of the Zone 2 Police Command (Lagos and Ogun States) have embarked on a series of humanitarian outreaches aimed at supporting vulnerable children, women and retired female personnel.

The series of events, which complement their earlier 5km Awareness Walk held in Lagos, further highlight the evolving role of Policewomen as protectors, caregivers and community advocates. It would be recalled that women were first recruited into Nigeria Police in 1955.

The celebration continued with a heartwarming visit to Holy Cross Girls High School, where the officers donated essential writing materials to students. The gesture was designed to encourage learning, strengthen the confidence of young girls, and inspire the next generation of women leaders. The interaction created an atmosphere of warmth and mentorship, reinforcing the message that the Police are partners in youth empowerment.

In another impactful outreach, the Policewomen proceeded to Obalende, where they reached out to children and vulnerable women in the community. Food items, drinks and relief materials were distributed in a humanitarian effort that brought smiles to scores of beneficiaries. Obalende, one of the busiest urban communities in Lagos, is home to widows, low-income women and displaced individuals who often struggle to meet daily needs.

Further, the Zone 2 female Police officers also paid tribute to some retired female officers, visiting them in their homes to show appreciation for their years of sacrifice, courage and dedication. Many of these retired officers including veterans like DIG Cecilia Bisi Ugowe (retd.) and DSP Rose (retd) served at a time when opportunities for women in law enforcement were far more limited. The visit highlighted the value of honouring trailblazers and preserving institutional memory.

Speaking on the series of activities, AIG Adegoke Fayoade hailed the female Police officers forreinforcing the values of service, care and partnership through their community outreach, youth support, and recognition of past heroes.

ACP Edinor Justice Ojali who is the ACS for Zone 2 Police Command shared the essence of their visit to Holy Child Secondary school. ‘It is as part of our activities to mark the 70 Years of Women policing in Nigeria. We have come to talk to the girls about choosing a career in the Nigeria Police. We are mothers and wives but it doesn’t stop us from carrying out our duties effectively.’

Going down memory lane, ACP Edinor Justice Ojali added: ‘Nigeria Police came into existence as far back as 1830 but it was until 1955 that women were recruited into the Nigeria Police. Since then, we give glory to God for the way things are turning. There is no section of Nigeria Police that you don’t see a woman thriving as a result of hard work, commitment, and dedication to duty.’

‘That’s why we have come out today to inspire the young generation that if they join the Nigeria Police they stand to benefit a lot from society,’ she concluded.
