DR. AMOS JOSIAH MANGUT,
Head WAEC Nigeria

On security, Dr. Amos Dangut stated: ‘We cannot feign ignorance of the level of insecurity in the country. Conducting examinations has been challenging. Instances of insecurity exist in many places across the country, and conducting examinations in insecurity-prone areas would require extra security arrangements. Consequently, we are liaising with the Inspector General of Police and State governments to provide adequate security to ensure that the examination is conducted nationally in a safe and secure environment. The Council appreciates the continued support received from the Nigeria Police as partners in actualizing its goals during the conduct of its examinations.’

Speaking further on the matter during the interview session, Dr. Dangut added: ‘From my own experience of Nigeria, virtually all states have one security challenge or another. So we have had discussions with relevant security agencies on their strategies that they have designed for conduct of exams. The agencies have been put on alert.’

‘From the beginning of the exams tomorrow, you will see that they will be part of the team moving around for the examinations. I am also aware that government is sensitizing students on security so there are measures from various aspects.’

On the issue of rogue website operators, he urged media professionals to help in the area of investigative journalism. ‘If the media can help to detect rogue websites and report them to WAEC and security agencies, it will be very helpful.’

‘We also want to sound a note of warning to all operators of rogue websites that WAEC will not condone their heinous acts during the conduct of the examination. Parents are hereby cautioned to desist from patronising these evil-doers who are hell-bent on frustrating the efforts of WAEC’, Dangut emphasized.

The examinations will also hold simultaneously in three other West African states viz. The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
