All newborns in Ghana will begin to have unique national identification numbers as soon as they are born. This is going by the assurance of the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as he launched the program today Thursday 14th March 2024 in Accra, Ghana.
For a start, TheMediaGood Newspaper gathered that the unique numbers will be linked to the details of their mothers. The children will have these unique IDs which will be processed to a national ID card when they turn 15. This innovation is expected to positively impact various aspects of national life as it may address concerns such as missing babies in hospitals, age cheats in sports, among others.
Speaking further on the innovation, the Deputy CEO for Margins Group, the company which produces the Ghana Cards, Mr. Kwesi Attah Baiden told MPs who had paid the organization a visit, ‘When you are a woman and you are pregnant you will sign in a number and after you are given birth your child’s details are linked to the mother’s details. The child’s details and the special number that was issued to the child are going to be attached to the mother’s biometric.’
‘So the things and days of people stealing other people’s babies at the hospitals are going to be a thing of the past. When the child gets to six years old by that time the biometric is fully developed. So at that time, they are going to be issued the Ghana card. However, this will be done in consent with Ghana Health Service and other governmental agencies because it has to be fully integrated’, Mr. Attah Baiden stated.
