The Senate in the Republic of Liberia today Tuesday 9th April 2024 endorsed the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court in the country. The long-awaited move has sparked excitement among activists and citizens alike in Monrovia and elsewhere.
This milestone decision, TheMediaGood Newspaper gathered, is seen as an opportunity to seek accountability and justice for crimes committed especially during the country’s civil wars within 1989 and 2003 which allegedly claimed about 250,000 lives. The West African country which was never colonized is experiencing sweeping reforms since the emergence of 79-year old Joseph Boakai as President last year.
To affirm unanimity among the legislators for this momentous decision, only one lawmaker out of 29 in the Upper House failed to sign the resolution which was backed by the House of Representatives last month.
