The Federal Government of Nigeria has designated 15 January annually as Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, a solemn and symbolic occasion to honour serving personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) while paying tribute to the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation’s territorial integrity and the safety of its citizens.
This was disclosed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, Defence Headquarters, in a press statement. He explained that the event is preceded by a week-long programme of activities, culminating in a grand parade and wreath-laying ceremony on 15 January.
Major General Uba further clarified that the day was formerly known as “Armed Forces Remembrance Day”, but has since been officially renamed “Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.”
The change reflects the dual essence of the occasion—celebrating the courage, professionalism, and service of living personnel, while solemnly remembering those who paid the supreme price in the line of duty.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria respectfully urges members of the media, as custodians of the Fourth Estate, to consistently adopt and use the correct designation, “Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day,” in all future reportage.
The AFN once again appreciates the media for its unwavering support in the ongoing fight against insecurity and looks forward to even stronger collaboration in the interest of national security and unity.
