The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Ibadan has been recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

IITA’s expansive landscape comprising lakes, forests, and research fields plays host to diverse species. It provides critical ecosystem services that support both local communities and long-term scientific innovation. The wetland contributes to water security, buffers against climate impacts, and serves as a living laboratory for sustainable agriculture and environmental restoration.

This global designation for the 2018 Africa Food Prize Winner, IITA, underscores its exceptional ecological value and its role in safeguarding biodiversity, water resources, and climate resilience. It also elevates IITA’s environmental profile and reinforces its leadership in integrating scientific research with natural ecosystem protection.

The Ramsar status is expected to drive new conservation partnerships, strengthen environmental education, and deepen global engagement. It marks a significant milestone for Nigeria and a powerful affirmation of IITA Ibadan’s commitment to protecting the planet while advancing agricultural transformation.
