Sickle Cell is a major genetic condition among Africans and people of African descent. For Jourdan Dunn, a supermodel who has graced some of the biggest runways worldwide the issue is close home, she hinted TheMediaGood Newspaper. This is because she has a son who lives with sickle cell. Therefore, she uses her platform for advocacy.
Speaking more about her sickle cell advocacy, the champion says she finds purpose in being an inspiration and bringing hope and beauty into the world. ‘It is so hard because in the beginning, I blamed myself and had shame because I knew I have the trait and his father had the trait. But in my head, I was like, oh, yeah, those are the chances, but it’s not going to happen to me.
And then it did happen. It was the realization of it all.’
‘And seeing him go through his challenges, it’s difficult. But then I flip it. I always look at the positive things, and I’m like, you know what?
I believe that with my platform, I’m allowed to use it to spread awareness, and that’s what we need, to spread awareness’.
‘And for people to have someone that is speaking for them. So I am a voice for my son and all the other sickle cell warriors out there.
So I like taking my stride and be like, yeah, no, this is a good thing. This is my purpose. I use my platform to speak on things like mental health or sickle cell or being a young mom’, Dunn concluded.
