He had gone out on August 1, 2024 as a Nigerian protester ready to vent his anger and frustration about the bad governance in the country. Little did he know that his vent will not just be taken by the winds but that the winds will blow good in reverse direction into his household.
His immediate challenges aired live on Channels TV spurred social media influencer, Morris Monye to throw up a crowdfunding campaign of NGN 1.8 million on microblogging platform, X (formerly Twitter). This practical need was sorted by regular Nigerians who were able to raise the amount within 24 hours to demonstrate ‘the real Nigeria’ as described by Kayode Okikiolu.
Venting his frustration, the father of a 13-year-old programmer, Ogwu Chijioke declared on the protest ground, ‘My name is Ogwu Benjamin Chijioke. I would rather die on the streets than die at home. I can’t sit down and watch the future of my son go to waste.’
‘I know I may not have a future again in Nigeria but my son’s future will not be wasted. I’m riding from Mile 2, Festac. My son at 13 is a programmer but I can’t even buy data for him to learn more. I can’t even pay for the tuition fees, millions of naira. At 13, he can programme games,’ were his words as he described the socioeconomic situation in his household to Channels TV reporter, Olu Phillips on the streets during the #EndBadGovernance protest.
What a way! This is how good smiled on Ogwu Chijioke from the protest ground.
