The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have reached an agreement on the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, resolving a 16-year dispute. The new agreement was finalized on December 23, 2025, and is set to be implemented starting January 1, 2026.

The agreement includes several key points:
A 40 per cent salary increase for academic staff.
Pension benefits for professors retiring at age 70, entitling them to a pension equal to their full annual salary.
A revised funding model for universities, with specific funds for research, libraries, laboratories, equipment, and staff training.
A requirement that only Professors can run for the positions of Provosts/Deans.
A clause allowing for the review of the agreement every three years.
it is expected that this new resolution will stop incessant strikes and disputes between the government and the university lecturers.
