Around February 14th (Valentine’s Day), someone posted this in a group I belong to, “If you need Bible as gift for Valentine, come take o!” It was a joke, so, nobody took him seriously. Few days later, I took the same joke, and added it to one of my articles for the day. I was pleasantly surprised to see readers sending me requests for Bibles I didn’t have.
I thought they should know I was only kidding around. Then, it hit me like thunderbolt: some people can say certain things and get away with it, but not you! Some people’s words don’t mean much to others, but not yours! I had to go and get some Bibles to give to some of the respondents.
I learnt a big lesson from that incident: be careful what you say, write or do when clowning around, because you might not get away so easily from the consequences like others did. I also learnt that TIMING was very important in anything you plan to do, whether for real or for fun. The first joker had posted those words at a time when his offer would have been considered hilarious; I had done it at a different time, and had obtained a different result. Personality and antecedents were also significant. If I joked with a Bible gift, or any other gift at all, people would most likely take me more seriously than the other fellow, because I’m considered a serious, trustworthy Christian than him.
How seriously do people take your words: promises, pledges, commitments, etc? Are your words worth anything at all? Are you worth your word/salt? Every man/woman is as GOOD as his/her WORD. In Matthew 5:37, JESUS said, “But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” Is your Yes “YES?!” Is your No “NO?!” Some of the people we call “Bro” and “Sister” are worse liars (truce breakers) than Satan himself. Repent! Become a keeper of your word!
Selah!
