We received the news of the road traffic accident involving popular pugilist, Anthony Joshua who thankfully survived and two others who didn’t make it out of that unfortunate situation.
While we know that Nigeria, as a system, still has a long way to go in terms of emergency response, Nigeria, as a people, is often quick to get on-site whenever issues arise. What the people do, once there, is a source of concern. Rather than provide support, they swipe out their phone to record.
In today’s case, people who trooped the scene could have supported the victims to a hospital but no, many filmed away while the victim sat there without help.
Another is the recent case of a biker, Emmanuel Enya who singlehandedly midwifed a woman on the road. Nobody showed up as much as the man tearfully called for help, yet the video went viral.
Is it bad to have a record of incidents, no, not really. But it seems to me that incidents have now become a battle between saving lives and shooting videos. We already have enough gory pictures, but I hope we don’t descend to seeing records of dying moments soon.
Why can’t we have more ‘save, save’ than ‘click, click’ on the scene? This is a dent on our humanity.
