The whole of Africa has been treated to a full dose of sporting action and masterpiece packed with pure African entertainment in Accra, Ghana since Friday 8th of March to today Saturday 23rd of March when the games draw to a close. Game after game, about 30 of them, produced medals distributed among over 5000 athletes and teams who represented their country.
In competitions of this magnitude and others like the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, etc., gold is the most coveted medal followed by silver and then bronze for two reasons. Gold guarantees that your national anthem will be played at the medal presentation to the delight of your countrymen and admiration of the globe. Also, gold ranks your country higher on the medals table, for example, a country with 1 gold will rank higher than another which got 1 silver. This is why you can see a country with fewer medals go higher than another with more medals on a medal table. See a good example between Mauritius and Kenya on the #Accra2023 medals table.
While the athletes displayed high-level technical competence and sportsmanship on the field, ring, court, and track, the fans and spectators displayed high-level cheers, jeers, and banters on the stands, at home, and on social media.
The friendly battle of Ghana jollof versus Nigeria jollof will never end. Both former British colonies, the hostilities in sports started pre-independence. Funny one, yesterday Ghana hauled probably its largest number of gold – 8 in number – in one day and called it fantastic Friday. Same day, in one sport alone – boxing – Nigeria polled same number of gold – 8. This automatically turned to a banter point.
While Ghanaians were celebrating their fantastic Friday ‘jejely’, Nigerians ‘pepper dem’ with you move from 6th position to 6th position despite fantastic Friday. You know how I settled the matter in 1 tweet, ‘8golds in one sport alone. 8 golds in one day. Charleyyy make Ghana have their say kasa, make we Nigeria dey have our way dey go’
