While working on a ‘Know Your Bible’ project with a group of children today, we needed to memorize the Isaiah 9:6 scripture. ‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.’ (KJV)
In that process, the girls began to muse the word ‘daughter’ in place of son. Ehn, in my class, e no fit happen. I asked, why? They asked why it seemed like the Bible was silent about feminine words.
That is a moment to teach a foundational truth. The Bible’s use of the collective ‘son’ is never tantamount to disrespect or slight of femininity. The Bible is never mute about words like she, her, daughter but when referring to a mixed gender group, collective words like son are used.
So I asked each girl to stand, hold her ears, and confess ‘I am a son of God’.
