A former Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen. Ajibola Basiru has been hailed as a progressive leader deserving of the respect and honour of African youths. This is because of his longstanding commitment and courage to pursue an ideal society.

This note was made at a forum of young politicians on Tuesday 23rd April 2024. ‘It was a great and historic experience meeting with one of the greatest assets of the Nigerian State and Nigerian Student’s Revolutionary Movement; One of those who fought tirelessly, risking it all; He was expelled from two universities for several years for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria.’

AJIBOLA BASIRU,
Former Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria

‘I first met him at the Lagos State University just before I won my election to become the President of Lagos State University Student’s Union Government in my 200 level. He had come to attend a meeting of the National Association of Nigerian Student’s (NANS) Zone D; a meeting organized to discuss the unification of NANS and to discuss the State of the Nation under the military regime. Chief MKO Kasimawo Abiola had won the June 12, 1993 Presidential election but the election was annulled by the military government and Chief Abiola was placed under house arrest.’

‘I watched him in admiration while he was speaking at the NANS Zone D meeting even though he was still expelled from the University and was fighting for his re-instatement. Fast forward he later got re-admitted into the University after a long legal battle with the University School Management; He graduated as a law student, went to the Nigerian Law School and later became the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the State of Osun; He further went on to become a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Osun Central; He also became a Law Ph.D. holder and today he is the National Secretary of the most vibrant and biggest political party in Africa, the All Progressives Congress (APC).’

‘The story of this great man reminds me of Dr. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (Madiba). Senator Ajibola’s life story gives me the courage to continue to pursue an ideal society, a course I believe in.’

‘Distinguished Senator, Dr. Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, I thank GOD for creating and making you a progressive leader that all should look up to, especially the youths of Africa. I thank you for the beautiful reception you accorded me. I do not take it for granted. GOD bless you.’
