I have read of wives, and children, of wealthy men, who have become kleptomaniacs just to get the attention of their husbands, and fathers/parents. In extreme cases, some men do daring stunts (absolutely foolish things) just to catch the attention of the women they love. Almost always, such daring acts work. But, do you have to wait to be surprised/shocked (‘rudely’) before doing the right and needful thing? When I first worked for Punch Newspapers in 2006, we were told during orientation for the new staff, that, “It’s no news when a dog bites a man. It is news when a man bites a dog!” Sensationalism sells any day, but the wise reporter/newspaper publishes TRUTH, with controlled sensationalism. There has to be a rightful balance. The wise finds that balance!
In my 34 years of walking with CHRIST, it amazes me to find people in the Faith/Church who are more attracted to bad news than the GOOD NEWS, which is CHRIST Himself – The Gospel. As a Christian, I’m easily drawn to GOOD Works: Acts of Kindness, Giving, Meeting the Needs of Others, Helping the Helpless, Sharing Useful Knowledge with Others, etc. When I read such kind acts in books or see them online, I’m often moved to tears, and I get involved where I can. That’s how I got involved with Missionary Agencies like CAPRO, Prison Outreaches, Feeding the Mentally Challenged, Orphanages, Indigent Students, Widows, etc., in recent and not too distant past.
I’m thus amazed when I write about GOOD DEEDS some 600 times a year (often sending out two articles daily), and some ‘silent’ readers (supposedly Christians o) only respond to what they consider ‘bad’, and never to the myriad of GOOD articles that permeates the greater part of our 365 days of each year. It beats me! I wonder if such people are always praying for the ‘Man to bite the dog!’ I often write about feeding the mentally challenged on the streets of Ibadan and helping the NEEDY out there, but you don’t respond (not necessarily to help or support), but to at least say, “Well done for the GOOD WORK.” O no, you don’t! But you come out with ‘Aya gbangba’ when you think we have erred. I don’t listen to such rantings nor regard comments from such quarters. I only take seriously the loving, gentle, sincere corrections of my TRUE friends and like-minded believers.
I moved to this city in 2017, and getting to know the GOOD WORKS of BOVAS, I wrote out praiseful words of commendation about the company, got a big beautiful frame around it, traced their corporate office to Bodija, and delivered it to them. I didn’t know anyone in that organization when I did, and I still know no one there seven years after. But, I let them know that one Dele Aina appreciates their INTEGRITY and SINCERITY of doing business with much exploited Nigerians. Last June, and over ten years ago, I graciously recognized and appreciated, OPENLY, some people, especially THREE TEACHERS who have impacted my life greatly. They’ll never forget both events. I plan to do same, this June, in this city, BGG. That’s HOW TO ENCOURAGE GOOD WORKS, and guide away from evil. I admit that my words for our political class/thieves were hard this morning, but tell me if you have not said/thought similar things of them in your homes, offices, or even in your religious places, where you felt ‘safe, and unexposed?!’ I hear, and take the GOOD ADVICE of my TRUE friends. Thank you guys. But, can you, yes you, honestly call yourself one, because the church of today, and Nigeria/Africa, is filled with many hypocrites, sycophants and charlatans? Our political leaders are a near-perfect reflection of most Nigerians.
Selah!
