The recent increase in electricity tariff for customers which were categorized as Band A by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has got Nigerians on a factfinding to see if their residences or offices will pay the new tariff. Thus, the distribution zones across Nigeria have begun to release the districts under their supply chain which falls under the Band A and therefore will be required to pay N225 per kWh as against the previous N66 per kWh.
The latest distribution company to release its information is the Eko Electricity Distribution Plc. (EKEDC). The DisCo which serves many areas in Lagos, EKEDC noted that Band A comprises 21 areas under its network.
The areas are ‘IJORA T/S_AJELE 1_AJELE_NEPA 1 ISLAND CAMPOS STREET BROAD STREET INNER MARINA STREET; ALAGBON T/S_ADEMOLA 2_ADEMOLA_POSTE RMU ISLAND ADEMOLA ADETOKUNBO STREET SANUSI FAFUNWA STREET/IDOWU TAYLOR STREET AKIN ADESOLA STREET/ADEOLA ODEKU STREET; IJORA T/S_AJELE 2_AJELE_CSS ISLAND AJELE STREET BROAD STREET/CUSTOM STREET INNER MARINA STREET/MARTINS STREET; IJORA T/S_AJELE 2_AJELE_NEW CUSTOMS ISLAND CAMPBELL STREET BAMGBOSHE STREET KING STREET; ALAGBON T/S_FOWLER 3_FOWLER_STATION FEEDER ISLAND OLUWA ROAD/THOMPSON AVENUE GLOVER ROAD/LAWRENCE ROAD/ALFRED REWANE ROAD MOSELEY ROAD/AWOLOWO ROAD.’

It should be noted that Band A are customers who enjoy electricity for about 20 – 24 hours per day. According to the Vice Chairman of NERC, Musiliu Oseni, Band A customers represent 15 per cent of the 12 million electricity customers in the country which is approximately 1.8 million subscribers.
