The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa yesterday launched the “Digitalization of Public Schools” initiative in Lagos, marking the official start of a nationwide program aimed at integrating technology into basic education across Nigeria.

He explained that the shift from traditional teaching to smart boards marks a necessary transition to technology-based, interactive learning. This change empowers students to actively explore, engage, and create instead of simply listening.

The Minister confirmed that the smart boards will allow teachers to integrate multimedia tools, digital textbooks, and real-time interaction into classrooms.

Furthermore, the ministry is aggressively embedding Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, health technology, and coding across the curriculum to ensure Nigerian youth acquire future-ready skills.

Dr. Alausa called the program a landmark step that supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which strongly positions education as a key driver of national transformation.

He also noted that the government is expanding digital literacy and health tech training for teachers to make classrooms smarter and ensure educators can effectively guide the learners of tomorrow.

Dr. Alausa announced the ministry has already distributed over 60,000 digital tablets to teachers in Oyo, Adamawa, and Katsina States, with plans for further delivery. He also highlighted a $40 million ICT development project launched to enhance infrastructure and hybrid learning across ten universities.

Alausa concluded that Nigeria has no choice but to embrace AI to transform and strengthen its education system, declaring that the country is beginning a new era that is inclusive, data-driven, and innovation-led.
