We have been treated to a trilogy of Continental competitions for Women this footballing off-season with the WAFCON, Women’s Euros, and the Copa America femenina. What a wonderful treat it’s been watching them all at almost the same period!
The final match of the last one, that of the South Americans, played today is one for the records. The game between Colombia and Brasil is perhaps a grudge match going by the stiff competition between the two countries. The game play on display was a masterpiece with a harvest of goals. It produced 8 goals apiece after 120 minutes, with Brasil edging it 5-4 on penalties.
Once again, the phenomenal Marta (now 39) came to the party to put in two goals which proved to be very helpful for the team winning a record 9th trophy and personally earning her the player of the tournament award. And yes, finally, there were spectators on the stand. All tournament-long, the stadiums were practically empty.
The Women’s Euros in Switzerland had a full house in many of its matches with some sublime skills and footballing excellence on display. The WAFCON hosted by Morocco witnessed significant improvements in terms of organization alongside a beautiful exhibition of footballing prowess from the African countries.
In all, women’s football is lit. Soon, it may be running neck and neck with the men’s game!
