If there is one prayer that I often pray, it is that one on the headline. ‘Let me not become the problem I am trying to solve.’ I have seen it enough in Africa with the likes of Robert Mugabe, Yoweri Museveni, Paul Biya, et al. They came into office under the flagship of wanting to change the affairs in their countries but ended up sitting down, sitting tight on power and became problems for their countries.
The same is happening in Senegal right now. I remember supporting Macky Sall and the international pressure mounted in 2012 to unseat Abdoulaye Wade who sat down, sat tight on the presidency of Senegal in 2012.
This is 2024 and Macky Sall is repeating the same course of history. Macky Sall has become the problem he was trying to solve. He has sat down, sat tight to the presidency. He has shifted the goal post of periodic elections in his country.
This has sparked protests in the country which is considered the beacon of Democracy in West Africa. Senegal has never experienced military rule since her independence in 1960.
You may not be the President of your country but how are you managing the influence you have in your sphere? What problem have you identified to solve but rather than solve it, you are drifting fast to becoming the same problem?
