As a child, the only two-wheelers I knew were the scooters. It was the big choice for our Hausa friends just as the Honda brand was their choice when it comes to cars. Motorcycles were very rare and there were no tricycles. I should think that my most impressionable recollection of seeing a motorcycle was in 1993 when K1 De Ultimate sang the famous line in which he debunked a certain prediction that the world would come to an end in that year. Fast forward to 1997, motorcycles had become so many and gone so commercial that the silencer of one injured my leg on my way to school one morning.
Today, motorcycles and tricycles have become a menace in many West African cities. They compete with cars for every available space during traffic jams on the roads.
I am not concerned about that menace today. Rather I want to celebrate the fact that scooters are making a return. Again, the resurgence is mostly championed by our young Hausa friends. It’s a good development. I appreciate it.
