Street Music, To What Import?

Share

I wonder what today’s street music does to our youths. Sincerely, what I perceive is an unusually paced music beat which leads them on a frenzy of awkward, hyper dance. It seems to just provide an avenue to dissipate pent up energy, nothing more. It doesn’t engage your soul and it doesn’t engage your mind. It runs antithetical to what I think music should do.

For me, music should provide good lyrical content. For this street music, it is, in fact, difficult to define if the lyrics are good or bad when you can’t hear what they are saying. On the other hand, can I, at least, feel the rhythm and melody of music in my ears. On this scale, too, this street music fails.

It’s well o, I will advise that there should be a limit of exposure to this street music. I also grew up on the streets of Lagos but this is not what music did for me. It made me question the reality of the times, it got me to think of sociopolitical issues, and got me to dance with sense.
