Some birthdays are remembered for their grandeur; others acquire a legacy that outlives the celebration. At Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan’s 50th birthday worship celebration, the unveiling of Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan: The Civilian General – The Man, His Wits, Passion, and Influence gave the golden jubilee a lasting literary dimension. With Chief Ajibola Adebutu making a launch contribution and Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, pledging copies for police training institutions and headquarters, the book launch opened a conversation about preserving the story of a man whose relationships and engagements span business, public service, security, philanthropy and faith.

Author, Mayor Oki Olatunji Samson; AC Admin, Maritime Police Command, Force Headquarters Annex Lagos, ACP Frances Oyin Adegbite and Co-author, Abayomi Oyelami…at the event

Co-authored by Mayor Oki Samson and Abayomi Oyelami, the book was formally unveiled before an eminent assembly of political leaders, security chiefs, business figures, traditional rulers, Christian leaders, family members and associates. Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu was among the distinguished guests at the celebration, which combined thanksgiving to God with a public presentation of Ogunsan’s life and journey.

One of the defining moments of the book launch came from Chief Ajibola Adebutu, the CEO of JB Farms, who served as chief launcher and announced a momentous contribution. His gesture gave the book presentation a solid statement of confidence and a significant financial boost, underscoring the importance of documenting the life and experiences of the celebrant.

In the same vein, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu pledged to take the story to Police institutions. He offered to make a pledge to make copies of the book available to Police training institutions and headquarters. The pledge offered a pathway for the publication to reach a wider institutional audience, particularly within the learning and administrative environments of the Nigeria Police Force and the security community with which Ogunsan has maintained engagements through his public and professional activities.

The book launch also attracted pledges and expressions of support from other prominent guests, including Lagos Deputy Chief of Staff, Sam Egube; Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu Fatai; CEO of Zenith Bank, Akin Ogunranti among others, though not accompanied by a stated amount.

The book review was delivered by Joshua Oyeniyi, the Convener of the Ambassadors Summit. His role brought a critical and interpretive element to the unveiling. For a book carrying the subtitle The Man, His Wits, His Passion, His Influence, the proposed circulation could provide readers across organizations and institutions an opportunity to encounter the narrative assembled by its authors and consider the different dimensions of leadership and civilian influence represented by its subject.

The phrase The Civilian General evokes leadership exercised outside military rank: the ability to engage different constituencies, build relationships and mobilise people through persuasion, credibility and collaboration. The title invites readers to look at Ogunsan’s familiar sobriquet, the Civilian General, and consider the person behind the public identity. Its four defining ideas of the man, his wits, his passion and his influence point towards questions of character, resourcefulness, conviction and relationships. The lasting value of the book rests on the experiences and evidence through which the portrait of its subject is developed.

For co-authors Mayor Oki O. Samson and Abayomi Oyelami, the task completed is to preserve a meaningful account of a living personality, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan, a man whose journey of impact would continue beyond the first five decades of life.

From the worship altar to the printed page, Dr. Ayodele Ogunsan’s special 50th Birthday Gospel Hymns and Worship Concert is rooted in thanksgiving, as a reflection of his Christian faith and his preference for marking important milestones in an atmosphere of worship.
