
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Mr. Suleiman Danlami Kum as the new Head of the Nigeria National Office, succeeding Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut,The appointment was announced by the press statement of the Commission’s Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola F. Adesina.
Kum, who joined WAEC in 1998 as an Assistant Registrar II, has risen through various positions in the Council over nearly three decades, attaining the rank of Senior Deputy Registrar in 2024.Born on October 16, 1970, in Minna, Niger State, Kum hails from Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State. He attended Baptist High School, Jos, before proceeding to the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, where he obtained a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production with Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in 1992.
He later obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in 2025 and is currently completing a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Educational Administration and Planning.His professional career began in 1993 during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployment to the Division of Agricultural Colleges, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he served as Head of the Animal Production Unit.
Between 1995 and 1998, he worked at Baptist High School, Jos, where he held various responsibilities including Form Master, Labour Master, Classroom Teacher and Health Master. He received the Light and Life Staff Merit Award in 1998 before joining WAEC.Since joining the Council on July 17, 1998, Kum has served in several capacities across WAEC offices in different parts of Nigeria. His postings included Awka, Yola, Makurdi, Gusau, Kano, Port Harcourt and Ikeja.
He has also served as Head of the Security Printing Department, Zonal Coordinator in Port Harcourt and Ikeja, Director of Administration, and Senior Deputy Registrar in Test Administration.
Kum is recognised for his expertise in test development, test administration, examination security, and branch and zonal office management. During his career, he contributed to several administrative and technological innovations within the Council, including the establishment of the Gusau office as a Custodial Centre, the introduction of Variable Data Printing and enhanced security features in examination materials.
He also played a role in replacing Council-wide attendance systems with facial-recognition biometric devices and led the delivery of Achievement Tests through the Computer-Based Examination (CBE) mode.WAEC said Kum’s career has been marked by integrity, diligence, innovation and commitment to service, earning him several commendations and awards within and outside the Council.
He has participated in numerous national and international trainings, symposia and conferences, including programmes in the United Kingdom. He has also published works in national and international volumes and presented academic and professional papers.
Kum is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM). He is married with children, and his hobbies include travelling, swimming, reading and watching movies.Prior to his appointment as Head of the Nigeria National Office, he served as Deputy Registrar in the Head of National Office’s Office.
