Discipline: Stay in Your Lane towards Excellence

L-R: bassist, Segun Aina aka Bamikalo; Yomi Oyelami; vocalist, Bayo Bankole

I was speaking to about fifty 13-15-year olds last week on a campground about the concept of the 10,000-hour rule and its connection to attaining excellence in any career. I got a simple practical connection to that today when I met two of my many egbons from my former church, The Apostolic Church Nigeria, at the 80th celebration of the matriarch of the Adeyemis from Ilupeju-Ekiti. Both musically inclined, one a vocalist, the other a bassist, and have been at this business for over 25 years.

When it was time for the duo musicians to drink, the bassist offered his vocal colleague cold water. He swiftly refused the offer which got the bassist to recall that his friend is a vocalist, he promptly opened the bottle and downed the 50cl water while demonstrating his fingers on the strings. And didn’t even bother to get an alternative.

We all laughed over the scene. But that quickly drove home last week’s lesson for me. If I meet those teens again, I would simply chip this example in. Discipline would mean different things for different people. If you would, however, pay the price that your chosen career demands, excellence is the destination. For me I penned this down within 20 minutes of that scenario.

PS: Congratulations to the mama that brought us all together. Mama Deaconess Ruth Adeyemi. If there is one highlight that would typify her, it is that she is a highly accommodating woman, embracing all manner of young and old from all walks of life. May she continue to live her bubbly life for as long as God would permit her on this terra firma. Amen.
