After three unsuccessful attempts at the title, the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon finally get their maiden WAFCON trophy on the 4th attempt. And they did it in clinical fashion with a 3-goal victory.
For me, Cameroon has by far been the most consistent team pushing for the title. They have appeared at all previous 13 editions of WAFCON and have entered the final on 3 other occasions before today’s victory. Their excitement was elevated. Former player and current President of Cameroon’s football federation FECAFOOT, Samuel Eto’o was all over the place with excitement.
I must salute Malawi for being a great addition to the WAFCON. Their entry has proven that the game is actually improving in Africa, and that investment in women’s football is something worth the time and effort.
I am more excited to see that the women’s game in Africa has grown tremendously over the years. This edition has been so entertaining. The game play is skillful and the technicality has improved greatly. The room for improvement is still wide.
Morocco has been a worthy host with consecutive hosting of 2022, 2024, and 2026 editions. I am sure that many other African countries have seen in Morocco what investment in sports really means and how its impact can rub off on Youths, socioeconomic development and international outlook.
I had thought that this year’s title would be for the Atlas Lionesses, at least to be an on-the-field show for the country, especially since the exit of Super Falcons, but Cameroon showed grit and class. Better luck next time Morocco.
