My heart was in my mouth for the major part of the just-concluded Nigeria-Egypt match today.
I didn’t have a doubt that Nigeria would defeat Egypt but the fight that the opponent put forward was one issue for me. This was an Egyptian team that made itself the whipping team of the group but has suddenly gotten its energy because it’s Nigeria. The ‘Pharaoh-esses’ (my word) wanted to become the spoiler, but God pass dem!
The other concern was the changes that happened in real time in the group as we watched. Zambia should qualify, no it’s Malawi, no it’s Nigeria, the method that will judge the two qualifying teams among the trio was a worry. Eventually, when the finality was determined and Zambia bowed out, I was shocked. The head-to-head rule knocked them out of the equation. What a pity!
I personally do not enjoy this head-to-head rule because as I found out later, it was applied at the last FIFA World Cup 2026 and how the United States and Mexico were guaranteed to win their group after just 2 matches even if they had the worst result in their third group game. The same thing in this case, Zambia is knocked out despite all the goals they had scored. It also means even if Super Falcons put 100 goals behind Egypt, they will never be able to topple Malawi as group C leaders. This is because Egypt has been counted as inconsequential in that group, leaving the decision only between the three teams who had 6 points each.
Moving forward, what does head-to-head rule which FIFA has adopted postulate:
When two or more teams have equal points, outcomes among the tied teams will take precedent.
-Head-to-head goal difference: which team has the superior goal margin from the direct games among the tied teams.
-Head-to-head goals scored: The number of goals scored in those specific direct meetings.
– other formerly existing criteria such as general goal difference, et al may then apply.
Do I agree, not necessarily, but head-to-head rule is the new order. Teams, their coaches, football administrators, and the FAs have to familiarize well with this new rule, prepare their teams with the new knowledge, and realize how defining it can be in subsequent competitions.
