They Are Not Lost, Only Distracted: A Lesson in Mentoring Young People

Share

If you are called or work with young people, our favorite Alpha Gens and Gen Z’s, you will have to be intentional and tireless in your support for them. There should probably be no demeanour that would diminish your love, optimism, and commitment to them.

I had to engage 2 of them today. Having seen the first one in months, a neighbor’s son and a high school boarder, he eloped upon hearing my voice. I smiled, ‘don’t worry I will get a hold of you’. The other one came visiting and I noticed how he was on a phone game for 3 hours. I asked that he drop the phone and handed him Christian literature to read, with a charge that he must finish the introduction (about 12 pages) before sleeping. I intend for him to finish the book.

It was a struggle. Within the first 10 minutes, he already slept off. I woke him and he continued. After two hours, he still had about 3 more pages to read but I urged him on and he did it. And we did a brief talk on what he has read. Beyond the initial ‘ginger’, I am sure he will be better for this engagement.

Mentors, these young people are not lacking in passion, they are just distracted, and I dare say, much more than our generation. They need us to stay committed and consistent. I believe once their wings are fanned, they will soar. May Grace abound!
