Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti has been posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, earning recognition in the 2026 class under the “Early Influence” category.

The announcement, made by the Hall of Fame Foundation, places Kuti alongside global icons such as Celia Cruz, Queen Latifah, and MC Lyte in the same category, which honours artists whose work significantly shaped the evolution of modern music.

Kuti, widely credited as the creator of Afrobeat, fused traditional African rhythms with jazz, funk and highlife to produce a politically charged sound that resonated globally. His induction marks a major milestone for African music, reinforcing his enduring influence decades after his death.

The recognition comes years after Kuti was first nominated for the Hall in 2021 and 2022, where he garnered strong global support but fell short of induction.

The 2026 induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and will be broadcast internationally.

Kuti’s latest honour adds to a growing list of global recognitions, including a 2026 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, further cementing his legacy as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.
