The Zonal Commanding Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Matthew Olufemi Olonisaye, has unveiled a proactive operational strategy aimed at reducing road traffic crashes along the critical Lagos-Ibadan corridor.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with TheMediaGood Newspaper, Olonisaye who assumed duty as the Zonal Commander (Lagos and Ogun states) on 2nd February 2026 emphasized that the corridor remains one of Nigeria’s most economically significant routes, requiring deliberate and sustained intervention.
“We ensure that we deploy our men as early as possible. Very early in the morning, we ensure that traffic meets them, not them meeting the traffic. We supervise both Lagos and Ogun states as that road passes both Lagos and Ogun states even up to Oyo State. But our supervision ends somewhere around Ogunmakin in a place called Onigari” he stated.
According to data from the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Lagos-Ibadan expressway corridor consistently ranks among the highest in traffic density and crash incidents nationwide. It serves as a major artery linking the nation’s commercial hub to other regions, handling thousands of vehicles daily.
Olonisaye noted that his Zonal Command, which supervises both Lagos and Ogun States, has intensified surveillance and coordination between sector commands. “We directed both Sector Commanders to strategize and initiate operational strategies to minimize road traffic crashes, especially on Lagos-Ibadan corridor because of the high volume of traffic,” he said.
The former Akwa-Ibom Sector Commander who served in the oil-rich state between May 2021- May 2024, Matthew Olonisaye stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility, urging motorists to adopt disciplined driving habits. “The road is not a place where you begin to show power. I will advise road users to learn to appreciate life. When life is lost, it is not reversible,” he warned.
“You should have value for life. When you have the mindset that once I leave my house in the morning, I wish to go back home peacefully. This mindset will go a long way in maintaining discipline on the road. I implore members of the public to ensure that they are disciplined on the road. When they are disciplined, our work will be easier,” he urged.
The FRSC boss further revealed that routine road audits are conducted quarterly to identify crash-prone zones and recommend infrastructural improvements to relevant authorities.
